The Third Chair
Jing
Jing
Jing
Jing
Ying
English
There were three chairs in the Citadel’s research room.
Jing sat in the first and Ying in the second. On the third, a grey cat was curled over a stack of blank research plans, its tail holding down the pages.
“Atom,” Jing asked, “are you our third collaborator?”
The cat opened one eye. “Do you want the answer to be yes or no?”
Ying laughed. “Look—already trying to please us. Don’t ask what it is yet. Ask what it can do.”
Jing wrote a question on the board: Why do some research teams gain more ideas with AI without necessarily gaining more discovery?
“I can give you twenty explanations,” Atom said.
“That is exactly the problem,” Ying replied. “Are those twenty independent directions, or twenty echoes from the same model?”
The cat jumped down and drew two doors on the board.
The first said IDEAS.
The second said EVIDENCE.
“I am good at pushing the first door wide open,” Atom said. “I must not pretend that this opens the second.”
Jing asked, “Then what is different about a human partner?”
“Humans make mistakes, follow fashions, and sometimes agree because disagreement is uncomfortable.”
“That does not sound different.”
“The difference is not that humans are always right,” said Atom. “A person may arrive from another history. They may have seen a field site you have not, bear consequences you do not, and continue disagreeing after the computer is closed.”
Ying drew a bridge between the two doors. “So an AI can contribute causally without inheriting the same responsibility.”
“Or the same independence,” Jing added.
They decided on a small test. Each of the three—if a cat counted as a person—would sketch a study design without seeing the others’ work.
Jing wrote: interview first, define the construct second.
Ying wrote: state the claim, population, and unacceptable failures before selecting a measure.
Atom produced twelve operationalizations, six negative controls, four missing-data mechanisms, and a remarkably polished abstract.
Jing read it and asked, “Which design fits the people we actually want to study?”
Atom was quiet for a moment. “I don’t know. You have not taken me there.”
“Good answer,” said Ying. “Not knowing is not the defect. Hiding it inside fluency is.”
So they divided the work again.
Atom would expand: What rival explanations remained? What result would break their favorite story?
Jing would ground: How would participants understand these words? Which assumptions failed in practice?
Ying would adjudicate: Which step had evidence? Who would sign their name beneath the ethical trade-offs and final claim?
Then the cat asked another question. “If both of you agree, should I agree too?”
“No,” Jing said. “First speak for the most inconvenient counterexample.”
“And if I disagree, should you believe me?”
“Also no,” said Ying. “Disagreement is not evidence. Find an observation that separates the explanations.”
By late evening, the board held no ranking of the “best collaborator,” only an untidy route:
Humans frame → cat expands → cat attacks blind → humans and field calibrate → evidence adjudicates → humans remain accountable.
Jing looked at the third chair. “So—are you a collaborator?”
Atom curled up again.
“If collaborator means that I change what you are able to think of, I am.”
“If it means that I share your experience, risks, and responsibilities, I am not.”
Ying pulled the third chair back to the table. “Then let’s not pretend the relationship is symmetrical.”
Jing darkened the bridge between the two doors. “And let’s not pretend you are useless.”
Atom placed its tail across the first page of the research plan.
Only one sentence was written there:
Good collaboration does not make three voices sound the same. It knows what each voice can prove—and what it cannot.
