How do participants interpret an utterance, coordinate understanding, and reason about another’s perspective?
- Pragmatics — language use and meaning in context.
- Common ground — information participants take to be shared.
- Conversational grounding — establishing sufficient mutual understanding.
- Theory of mind — attributing and reasoning about mental states.
These concepts overlap without being interchangeable. A system’s Context window and memory describe information mechanisms; they do not by themselves establish shared understanding.
